Hello everyone, introduce my name is Agung Prabowo, I am an 8th semester student from Singaperbangsa Karawang University and majoring in Informatics Engineering. In this article, I will tell you a little about the delivery of feedback.

There is always a first time for everything or there are always obstacles and obstacles when we do something, and this is definitely experienced by everyone with their own conditions and ways. In dealing with such situations, it is not uncommon for us to need feedback or advice from others. The advice or feedback is also intended to make us more enthusiastic and also better in the future. In conveying feedback or advice it also needs to be done in a good and appropriate way in order to avoid hurting the feelings or mentality of the person receiving the feedback and also because the feedback was delivered with the intention of improving and motivating him.

Feedback or advice that is good, useful and also constructive will be able to contribute to more positive and better results. There are 4 things to consider when you want to make constructive feedback. That is :

  • Explain specific situation and behavior
  • Focus on the issue, not the person
  • Be based on observations and evidences
  • Build things for the better

To help us deliver constructive feedback, we can use the SIB (Situation, Behavior, Impact) framework:

  • Situation

Put the feedback into context by telling them where and when the situation occurred.

  • Behavior

Describe the specific behaviour that took place. Tip: Always focus on the behavior, never on the person. This keeps things from getting personal.

  • Impact

Use ”I” statements to describe how their behavior has affected you or the team.

One of the feedbacks, especially in the field of work or during a joint project that was quite impressive and at the same time helped me to do better, was the feedback given by my seniors. During the process of working on the project I experienced quite a lot of work, this was actually caused by many things from me personally, such as at that time I was participating in quite a number of activities at the same time and also at that time I did feel difficult and also lacked confidence with the code that I used. I made on the project, but then he said “Why should you worry? Try to imagine the people who write code for rockets or for other more complex tools, if they have doubts and are not sure about the code they write it will surely harm a lot of people. What is written in the code is what actually happened, if you have doubts it means you still don’t believe in the code you wrote yourself. You have to be more serious and confident in doing this.” actually those words also became a slap in the face for me personally. However, on closer inspection, these words did not mean to hurt me, but to motivate me to fight even harder and at the same time to be more confident in what I do. And until now I’m still trying to improve myself to be even better. And also thanks to the people who have given me constructive feedback, input, or advice to make me even better in the future.

This article is a little sharing from my personal experience about feedback from someone given to me and also how to convey feedback and receive feedback properly so that it can continue to grow and develop for the better, hopefully this article can be useful for others. Feel free to discuss about this in the comment section.

thank you
